Novak Djokovic created history by surpassing Swiss tennis legend Roger Federer by staying the World No. 1 tennis player for a straight 311 weeks. Djokovic made the record in March, 2021. At the time, both Djokovic and Roger Federer had 20 Grand Slam titles to their name. 

Novak Djokovic made the record at the age of 33. His primary competition, Roger Federer turned 40 this month. Novak Djokovic is also a year younger than Rafael Nadal who has 20 majors. 

After sweeping to a ninth Australian Open in February, Djokovic said, “Now that I’ve become the historic No. 1, I’m relieved.” 

Novak Djokovic made his top 100 debut in July 2005, weeks after Rafael Nadal won his first Roland Garros. He was in the top 50 in June 2006, in the top 20 in October 2006 and in the top 10 by March 2007. He became the world No. 1 for the first time in July, 2001, the day after he won Wimbledon for the first time after defeating Rafael Nadal in the final.
