Barbershops have a long and illustrious history. They’ve always been more than just a location for men to get their hair cut, they’re also a place for men to socialize. Trips to the barbershop used to be a weekly routine, with men waiting in line for a shave and a haircut. Barbershops developed a unique social connection with their customers. Men went to interact and meet like-minded individuals while taking a break from their routine. Barbershops were more of a social club than a hairdresser’s salon.” Barbershops were elegantly constructed, and some would say that they outperformed the design of modern salons today.

But barbershops, as great as they were, fell rapidly over the twentieth century.

It’s easy to conjecture, but the collapse of the barbershop appears to have begun in the early 1900s with the introduction of the safety razor. When the price of the barbershop was compared to the price of this new razor, the razor was a far more reasonable option. Many other factors contributed to the decrease, including:

  • The Great Depression
  • Second World War
  • The trend of the ‘60s and ‘70s of long hair and beards

Now barbershops have been making a comeback in recent years. In the words of Charles Kirkpatrick, CEO of the National Association of Barber Boards of America, “barbering is the #1 Fastest-Growing Industry.”

So, what triggered this current surge in barbershops? There are several theories about this. Celebrities attending barbershops, talking about it on social media, and growing out their beards might have undoubtedly aided this process. Visiting a barbershop is more than simply getting a haircut; it’s an experience in and of itself. Men no longer need to painstakingly edge their own hairline when a short trip to the barbershop can have the job done fast and professionally.
