Britain’s Prince Harry and his wife Meghan Markle’s tell-all television interview with Oprah Winfrey has not gone down well with British media tabloids, which have hit back at the Royal couple since it aired late on Sunday.

The interview, which was Harry and Meghan’s first since stepping down from Royal duties, was criticised by British press even before it aired, with the release of the excerpts from the interview further damaging a tumultuous relation between the tabloids and the couple, according to a CNN report.

Meghan, the Duchess of Sussex, claimed she felt lonely in the Royal family and the lack of support gave rise to suicidal thoughts. She also said that people within the Buckingham Palace were concerned about the colour of her son Archie’s skin

The Daily Mail tried to fit every aspect of the interview with the banner headline on their website: “Meghan claims she was suicidal when she was 5 months pregnant, Kate made HER cry and Royals refused to make Archie a prince because they were worried how ‘dark’ he would be, as Harry reveals their new baby will be a GIRL”.

Another headline on their website read : “I WANTED TO KILL MYSELF” which ran along with a video on loop from the interview, where Meghan says, “I just didn’t want to be alive anymore.”

In another article, the publication tore into their talks about life in the United States, where they have also started raising chickens.

“Back to basics at their $14.5 million mansion,” the headline read.

The Daily Mail’s print edition on Monday stressed on the controversy surrounding the colour of Archie’s skin. “MEGHAN ACCUSES PALACE OF RACISM”, their front-page headline read.

This came after the outlet was dismissive about the interview prior to its airing on Sunday, calling it “a sideshow”.

Meanwhile, The Sun used Meghan’s name before marriage in the headline, “Meghan Markle may never return to Britain after angering Royal Family with bombshell Oprah interview”.

They also said that “insiders (who) fear she and Prince Harry could have burnt their bridges by failing to tell family members what was in the two-hour chat before it was shown”.

The publication has dubbed the rift between Meghan and the Royal family as “Megxile”. British tabloids have also used the term “Megxit” to refer to the fallout, similar to the term used for the United Kingdom’s exit from the European Union.

“Queen: Duty and family unite us,” the Daily Express newspaper wrote on its front page. “That’s public service for you, Harry and Meghan … NOT a self-serving TV chat with Oprah”.

According to Sky News, Monday’s edition of the Daily Mail newspaper will highlight Princes “Charles and Williams’ immense sadness” amid the “Oprah interview fallout”.

Both Harry and Meghan have been vocal about scrutiny from the British press in the past.

“We all know what the British press can be like, and it was destroying my mental health,” he told late night talk show host James Corden.

In the interview on Sunday, Meghan also said that there were double standards in the British media when it came to covering her and Catherine, the Duchess of Cambridge and the wife of Prince William.

“I can see now what layers were at play there. And again, they really seemed to want a narrative of a hero and a villain,” she said.
