Former Germany and Bayern Munich soccer player Jérôme Boateng, who was accused of assault by his former partner, has been convicted and fined 1.8 million euros, AFP reported. The football allegedly assaulted the mother of his twin daughters during an argument in 2018.

The 33-year-old has been accused of bodily harm. Prosecutors said he throw a lamp and a small cooling box at Senler during the alleged assault that took place in the Caribbean in July 2018.

During the court appearance, the woman said the footballer punched her, puller her hair, bit her and insulted her during the alleged incident. She also told the court that she was punched so hard that she lost her breath for a moment. 

Senler, during another court appearance, said that he punched her in the kidney so hard that she found it difficult to breathe for sometime. She said he pressed his thumb into her eye, giving her a black eye. She also said that two had an “on-off relationship” since 2007.

“Our relationship was always turbulent,” Senler said, with a “very toxic” connection.

Boateng, however, denied the allegations and gave a different version of the incident. He told the court that he and his ex-girlfriend had disagreement after tensions that escalated during a game of cards. He claimed that Senler became aggressive and hit him, injuring his lip. He went on to claim that when he tried to push her away from him, she fell and injured herself.

Boateng arrived in court on Thursday and was convicted of assault.

He no longer plays for Bayern as the club declined to extend his contract at the end of last season. He signed with French team Lyon in the offseason but was dropped by Germany coach Joachim Löw as part of a shakeup of the squad in March 2019.
