Fans of the late Princess Diana are remembering her on the day of King Charles’ coronation, as they flood social media with photos and videos of the People’s Princess becoming queen in some imagined parallel universe.

Some even proclaimed Diana as the “only queen that matters” and the “real queen,” overlooking the fact that Camilla Parker Bowles, the Queen Consort and King Charles’ current wife deserved that title.

Diana was the first wife of King Charles III and mother of Prince William and Prince Harry. Her activism and glamour made her an international icon. She died tragically In the early hours of August 31, 1997. Then-Princess of Wales died from injuries sustained earlier that night in a car crash in the Pont de l’Alma tunnel in Paris, France. Diana’s partner, Dodi Fayed, and the driver of the Mercedes-Benz W140, Henri Paul, also died upon impact.

King Charles and Princess Diana were married in 1981. The royal couple separated in 1992 and their divorce was finalized in August 1996.

In the biography Charles At Seventy: Thoughts, Hopes And Dreams, then a 32-year-old future monarch cast doubt on marrying Diana, 20, after only 13 dates.

“I desperately wanted to get out of the wedding in 1981, when during the engagement I discovered just how awful the prospects were having had no chance whatsoever to get to know Diana beforehand,” Charles allegedly told biographer Robert Jobson. 

In a bombshell interview with the BBC’s Martin Bashir in 1995, Diana said, “We could see what the public was requiring. They wanted clarity of a situation that was obviously becoming intolerable. My husband asked for the separation and I supported it,” Diana said, but added it caused her a “deep, deep, profound sadness.”
