Kris Wu, a
Chinese Canadian rap musician, was sentenced to 13 years in jail on rape
charges by a Beijing-based court, Chinese media reported on Friday. Officials
from the Canadian embassy in China attended the sentencing. A local court in
Chaoyang district of Beijing said Kris Wu, whose formal name is Wu Yi fan,
raped three women between November and December 2020.

Who is Kris Wu? 

Kris Wu is a Chinese Canadian rapper, singer, actor and model. He was formerly a member of the South Korean-Chinese boy band exo and its subgroup Exo-M before he quit the group in 2014. 

Kris Wu was born on November 6, 1990 in China’s Guangzhou. His parents divorced when he was young and Wu was raised entirely by his mother.

At the age of 10, Kris Wu and his mother moved to Vancouver, Canada. He came back to China when he was 14 years old and attended school in Guangzhou. However, he went back to Canada soon after and studied at the Sir Winston Churchill Secondary School. 

When he was 18 years old, Kris Wu auditioned for SM Entertainment’s Canada global auditions, which were held in Vancouver. He became a trainee for the company and was offered a role in Exo in 2012. 

Kris Wu can speak five languages — Mandarin, Cantonese, English, Korean and Japanese.

In July 2021, a 19-year-old Chinese student alleged on social media that Kris Wu had a pattern of sexual abuse, involving multiple females, some underage, while they were unconscious and under the influence of alcohol. 

Wu denied the allegations. He was arrested on August 16, 2021 on suspicion of rape. 

On Friday, November 25, Kris Wu was found guilty of rape as well as the crime of assembling a crowd to engage in sexual promiscuity.
