On Monday, the Israeli military announced the successful release of a female soldier from captivity in the Gaza Strip. This operation took place in the Palestinian territory controlled by Hamas.

Who is Ori Megidish?

The soldier in question, Ori Megidish, had been taken captive by Hamas on October 7. Following her release, the army confirmed that she underwent a medical examination, is in good health, and has been reunited with her family. A photograph shared by the office of Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu showed Megidish surrounded by her family members, celebrating her safe return.

In response to the increasing intensity of the Israeli military’s ground and aerial assaults, the Palestinian militant group Hamas released a brief video on Monday. In the video, three individuals, among the more than 230 hostages claimed by Israel to have been seized by Hamas during their violent attack on October 7, are shown. Seated between the other two hostages, one of the women in the video directs an impassioned message straight to Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu. She criticizes him for his inability to prevent the attack by Hamas and for his failure to secure the release of the captives.

The video only features these three individuals, and it remains unclear to what extent the woman speaking willingly gave her statement or if it may have been influenced by Hamas.

The woman who delivers the message is Daniel Aloni, who, along with her daughter, was abducted while visiting family at Kibbutz Nir Oz, where Hamas carried out a brutal attack on October 7. She commences her address by speaking to Netanyahu, stating, “You promised to free us all. Instead, we bear the consequences of your political and military shortcomings.”

Aloni alludes to an unspecified “mistake” made by Israel’s leaders on October 7, the day when Hamas militants launched an assault in southern Israel, leading to casualties and the kidnapping of over 200 individuals, as reported by Israeli authorities. The nature of this “mistake” is left ambiguous in her statement.
