Suzan DelBene, a member of the Democratic party, will be contesting the primary elections in Washington on Tuesday. She currently holds the office of Washington’s 1st Congressional district.

DelBene, 60, will be competing to retain her seat. In Washington’s top two electoral system, her rivals will be Vincent Cavaleri, Derek Chartrand and Matthew Heines — all Republicans.

Who is Suzan DelBene?

Suzan DelBene has held her US House of Representative’s office for nearly a decade now. She was first sworn in Congress in November 2010. Her Congressional jurisdiction expands spans from northeast King County to the Canadian border and includes parts of Snohomish, Skagit, and Whatcom counties.

DelBene spent her childhood in Newport Hills and Mercer Island of Washington. She later went on to pursue her bachelor’s degree in biology from Reed College. The Democrat also holds an MBA from the University of Washington.

Before starting work in government departments, Suzan DelBene kicked off her career in immunology research. Suzan DelBene also spent 12 years at Microsoft, most recently as corporate vice president of the company’s mobile communications business.

DelBene currently serves as the Vice Chair of the House Ways and Means Committee. She is also a member of the Select Revenue Measures and Trade Subcommittees, according to her Congressional website.

After being a part of the US Congress for roughly 10 years now, the Democratic lawmaker has also joined multiple groups and caucuses. She serves as Chair of the forward-thinking New Democrat Coalition and is co-chair of the Women’s High-Tech Coalition, Internet of Things Caucus, and Dairy Caucus. She was recently added to the Pro-Choice caucus.

Suzan DelBene currently lives in her Congressional district with her husband Kurt and two children, Becca and Zach. The family also has a pet dog named Reily.
