Despite extensive efforts to save her life, the 20-year-old officer succumbed to her injuries at Jerusalem’s Hadassa Hospital. Lubin, originally from the United States, had relocated to Israel in August 2021 to join the Border Police. Her attacker, identified by the Palestinian news agency WAFA as Muhammad Omar al Farouk, was a 16-year-old resident of East Jerusalem, a territory occupied and annexed by Israel.

The attack took place near Herod’s Gate, one of the entrances to the Muslim quarter of Jerusalem’s Old City. Law enforcement officials detained another individual at the scene, and an investigation into their potential involvement in the attack is underway.

The head of the Israel Police, Yaakov Shabtai, arrived at the scene to assess the situation alongside the Jerusalem district commissioner. Notably, this incident marks the third Palestinian attack in East Jerusalem since the onset of the conflict with Hamas. Earlier in the day, 23 Palestinians were arrested in the Shuafat neighborhood, located on the eastern side of the city, on suspicion of participating in violent protests and promoting “violence and terrorism” on social media.

Additionally, Israeli forces were involved in a confrontation in Halhul, in the southern West Bank, resulting in the death of 21-year-old Palestinian Mahmud al Atrash and leaving five others injured, three of them in serious condition.

Since the beginning of the ongoing conflict, 155 Palestinians in the occupied West Bank, including East Jerusalem, have lost their lives in violent incidents involving Israeli forces, primarily during military operations. This brings the total death toll in 2023 to 363, including 84 minors, marking the highest number of casualties since the Second Intifada. Furthermore, the region has witnessed the emergence of new Palestinian armed groups carrying out an increasing number of attacks, resulting in 35 fatalities on the Israeli side, primarily among settlers, thus far this year.
