Winters can be considered a tricky season. While it gives us the warm, fuzzy feeling after wearing a sweater, dry skin can be a buzzkill. The chill in the air can cause your skin to dry out more quickly, aggravating skin conditions such as eczema and psoriasis.

If you’re wondering why your skin doesn’t seem to be retaining any hydration despite using a variety of moisturisers, it’s time to try making your own natural moisturisers at home. Here are some easy-to-make and use moisturisers that keep your skin hydrated.

Olive oil cleanser to soothe dry skin

“A great natural oil to use is olive oil, which works as a natural cleanser and moisturiser”, Brandy Crompton, a licensed aesthetician and former manager of LeBliss Salon and Spa in Louisville, Kentucky, told everydayhealth.com. “Just rub the oil into your skin and drape a warm, damp cloth over your face until it cools,” Crompton said, “then wipe away the excess oil.” Olive oil is a good choice as a cleanser because it won’t strip your skin’s natural oils, but it will clean your skin, she added.

DIY an Avocado mask

Another natural way to soothe dry skin is to make an avocado mask at home. Crompton recommended pureeing half an avocado and mixing it with 1 teaspoon (tsp) olive oil; for extremely dry skin, add 1 tablespoon (tbsp) honey. Apply the mask to your face and leave it be for 15 to 20 minutes before washing it away. Your skin should feel moisturised, but you can amp up the hydration by using your regular moisturiser on top of it.

A natural olive oil and sugar scrub

By combining olive oil and sugar, you can make a naturally moisturising exfoliating scrub. Crompton recommended mixing 12 cup sugar and 2 tablespoons olive oil. You can also add an essential oil, such as lavender, to give it a natural scent and help you relax. Rub the scrub gently into your skin before rinsing it away. To seal in the benefits of freshly exfoliated skin, finish with a soothing moisturiser.

“Coconut oil becomes solid at room temperature, so use it as a moisturising cream at bedtime or anytime,” recommended Tsippora Shainhouse, MD, a board-certified dermatologist at SkinSafe Dermatology and Skin Care in Beverly Hills, California. “For chapped heels and hands, apply the oil, then layer with thick socks or nonlatex gloves.”
