A tooth filling is a simple dental treatment that replaces the broken structure of a tooth in order to restore its function and aesthetics.

If only one or two fillings are needed, the treatment can be performed in a matter of minutes. It’s as simple as that.

An ordinary trip to the dentist for a tooth filling, on the other hand, was anything but usual for a man from Illinois, US.

Tom Jozsi, 60, swallowed the dentist’s drill bit by accident and had to be sent to the hospital to have it removed.

Tom stated that he did not feel the tool pass down his throat. However, a CT scan indicated that the 1-inch piece had penetrated his lung.

“I didn’t even notice it moving down. All I could feel was a cough. ‘You didn’t swallow it,’ they discovered after the CT scan. You breathed it,” Tom told a news outlet.

Doctors believe Tom inhaled just before coughing, sending the metal object deep into his airways.

According to Dr Abdul Alraiyes, the metal object was stuck deep enough in the airway to elude detection by standard scanners. “When I saw the cat scan, that thing was pretty deep down on the right lower lobe of the lung,” Dr Abdul.

Following the CT scan, Dr Abdul and his team of experts performed an unusual surgical technique to extract the drill bit. They employed a piece of novel equipment that is often used to detect cancer.

A brief video clip from the scan shows the medical team effectively negotiating the small airspaces to reach the drill bit component while avoiding injuring Tom.

“I’ve never been happier than when I opened my eyes and saw him with a smile under that mask shaking a little plastic container with the tool inside,” Tom stated after the treatment.
