Theranos founder Elizabeth Holmes made an attempt to flee
the country by booking a one-way ticket to Mexico departing in January 2022,
shortly after she was convicted of fraud, prosecutors alleged in a new court
filing on Friday.

In January last year, Holmes was convicted of defrauding
investors while running the failed blood-testing start-up Theranos. In
November, she was sentenced to more than 11 years in prison. She has appealed
her conviction and does not start her prison sentence until this spring, a
waiting period that prosecutors described as generous due to her being
pregnant. She must self-surrender on April 27 to serve her prison sentence.

Age

Holmes was born on February 3, 1984, in Washington, DC. She
is 38 years old.

Family

Holmes’ father, Christian Rasmus Holmes IV, was a vice
president at Enron. Enron was an energy company that later went bankrupt after
an accounting fraud scandal. Her mother, Noel Anne, worked as a Congressional
committee staffer.

Relationships

She was in a romantic relationship with technology
entrepreneur Ramesh Sunny Balwani, a Pakistani-born Hindu who immigrated to India
and then the US. The couple met in 2002 and Balwani was 19 years older than
Holmes. They jointly ran the company Theranos. Balwani divorced his wife in
2002 and became romantically involved with Holmes in 2003. He left Theranos in
2016 in the wake of investigations.

In 2019, Holmes became engaged to Billy vans, a 27-year-old
heir to Evans Hotels. It is a family-owned group of hotels in the San Diego
area. Later that year, Holmes and Evans married in a private ceremony. However,
they have not directly confirmed whether the two are legally married. In July
2021, Holmes gave birth to a son. In October 2022, weeks before her sentencing
hearing, it was reported she was pregnant again.

Net worth

In 2015, Forbes named
her the youngest and richest self-made female billionaire in the USA on the
basis of a $9 billion valuation of her company. After the fall of Theranos,
Holmes’s net worth went from a reported $4.5 billion to $0 as of 2022,
according to Forbes.
