As India continues to be battered by the second coronavirus wave, the question looms over the fate of the postponed CBSE class 12 board examination. Evaluating students based on their examination results from classes 9, 10
and 11 is one of the several options being explored by the board as a substitute to scrapping the class 12
examinations, as per a report by the Times of India.

While many states in the country have backed a compartmentalised exam
schedule, some have disagreed and a few others have asked for vaccination of
candidates and staff to be held before the exams.

The report referred to CBSE sources, who said that conducting examinations
in the current situation did not seem feasible.

It further noted that the final decision in the subject will be taken
in the first week of June.

“Although states/ UTs have made their suggestions, everyone would
look at the CBSE way as the guiding principle. Therefore, whatever decision the
Centre is likely to take by June 1 will be important not only for the forthcoming
entrance tests, but also for states in conducting their own board exams,”
the report quoted a CBSE official as saying.

Two proposals have reportedly been shared by CBSE regarding date and
format of the exams, wherein the first calls for conducting exams between
August 1 and August 20 in notified centres for 19 ‘major subjects’.

The second, on the other hand, prescribes objective-type questions and a shorter schedule for exams, to be held between July
15 and August 26, in the school where a particular student is enrolled.

The Supreme Court of India, on May 31, is set to hear a plea seeking
directions of possible cancellation of examinations.
