Amazon Quiz (June 24, 2022): Mawsynram and Cherrapunji, the two wettest places on earth, recently received record breaking rains. They are located in which state?

Assam

Nagaland

Meghalaya

West Bengal

Answer: Meghalaya

Mawsynram and Cherrapunji, located in the Indian state of Meghalaya and known as the two wettest places on Earth, set new rainfall records in June 2022.

Mawsynram recorded a whopping 1003.6 mm of rainfall in a 24-hour period last week, shattering the previous June rainfall record of 945.4 mm in 1966. Cherrapunji, meanwhile, was close behind with 972 mm of rainfall recorded in the same 24-hour period.

The record rainfall came after three days of consecutive rains battered Cherrapunji, which recorded its third wettest (June 17) and eighth wettest (June 15) days in June in 122 years.

In total, Cherrapunji received 2,456 mm of rain over a three-day period. Annually, Cherrapunji receives 11359.4 mm of rainfall on an average. Mawsynram edges ahead in terms of the ‘world’s wettest place’ title, with an average annual rainfall of 11802.4 mm, equivalent to 465 inches or 38.7 feet.

For added perspective, the bustling city of Mumbai in Maharashtra, known for fairly frequent floods, receives 2,205.8 mm of average rainfall in an entire monsoon season.

The record June 2022 rains in Cherrapunji, however, triggered massive floods and landslides in Meghalaya and neighbouring Assam, which have left 122 dead thus far and impacted more than 1.9 million people across 2,930 villages, leaving more than 100,000 people displaced.
