International luxury hotel chain Marriott International suspended all its operations in Russia due to the country’s ongoing war with Ukraine.
“The conflict in Ukraine, now stretching into the fourth month of fighting and displacement, has had grave humanitarian, socioeconomic and global impacts. Throughout this challenging period, Marriott has kept the safety and wellbeing of our associates and guests top of mind,” the hotel chain, which closed its corporate office in Moscow in March, said in a statement on June 3.
“We have come to the view that newly announced US, UK and EU restrictions will make it impossible for Marriott to continue to operate or franchise hotels in the Russian market. We have therefore made the decision to suspend all Marriott International operations in Russia,” the statement added.
However, Marriott added that the process to suspend its 25-year-long operation in Russia was “complex” and that it remained “focused on taking care of our Russia-based associates.”
Russia’s invasion of Ukraine, which began on February 24, 2022, led to a mass exodus of Western companies, including global conglomerates, from the country, including the likes of Renault, McDonald’s, Starbucks, and hundreds more, on the back of waves of Western sanctions.
Despite the pull-out, however, Russia continues to make more money from energy exports than it spends on Ukraine on a daily basis, operating on what one could simplistically call an approximate $700 million daily profit margin.
