Answer: Pompeii

Mount Vesuvius, a major stratovolcano in Italy with a long history of eruptions, was behind one of the most well-known volcanic eruptions in human history.

According to Sky History, the population of the town of Pompeii, some 15,000 strong, had felt an earthquake 17 days prior to the eruption, and minor quakes from four days prior to the events of August 24, 79 AD.

The Romans in the region, who were accustomed to occasional seismic activity and believed the volcano to be extinct, were unaware of its destructive power and caught off guard.

The eruption of Mount Vesuvius in 79 AD produced 100,000 times the thermal energy of the atomic bombings in the Japanese cities of Hiroshima and Nagasaki during World War II, an eruption so violent that it sent a plume of deadly smoke and ash 33 kilometres into the atmosphere.

The volcano spewed one and a half million tonnes of debris into the atmosphere every second when it erupted, and the plume soon extend long enough to overshadow the city of Pompeii, some 8 kilometres from the volcano.

The city’s population, who had not anticipated a disaster of this nature, were caught unaware and are believed to have all perished. While the remains of more than 1,500 people have been found at Pompeii till date, the actual death toll from the catastrophe remains unknown.
