On
Sunday, November 20, Los Angeles was witness to the 50th annual American
Music Awards (AMA) 2022, held at the city’s Microsoft Theatre. The programme, produced by Dick Clark Productions and ABC, was aired live on said channel. The AMA is an annual award show that awards artists based on voters’ preferences of their favourite artists, songs and albums.

This year,
American singer Taylor Swift took home the top honours by winning the Artist of
the Year award along with winning the other 5 categories in which she was
nominated. Swift now has a record 40-wins at the AMA while the late Michael Jackson remains atop the male list, with 26 wins. Puerto Rica’s rapper Benito Antonio Martinez Ocasio, popularly
called Bad Bunny was nominated for eight awards, eventually winning two (favourite
male Latin artist and favourite Latin album).

The annual awards,
first started in 1973, was music industry specific, as both nominations and
winners were decided by chosen members of the music industry, commercial
performances and so on. However, this trend saw a halt in 2005 when the sole
criterion for the nominations and victory has been the vote of fans and public.
