The eighth and final season of Brooklyn Nine-Nine has released an emotional video ahead of its US launch— and hinted a number of possible character returns.

The new trailer prominently shows Chelsea Peretti’s Gina Linetti (at 1:16), but it also implies that we may see more of Holt’s husband Kevin, Doug Judy, and Adrian Pimento.

The trailer begins with Charles Boyle (played by Joe Lo Truglio in a hairy coat) sitting down with Jake Peralta (Andy Samberg) and lament: “I am afraid that my time with you will be cut short; no more stakeouts and drinks after a long shift, or midnight call when you’ve had a breakthrough in a case.”

“I’ve always had this image of us in our 90s hunting down criminals at the retirement home… but I guess that was just a dumb fantasy,” Charles adds, as Jake tries to hold back a sob.

Plot details for the new series are kept light in the new promo, bar a glimpse at Jake Peralta (Andy Samberg) and Amy Santiago (Melissa Fumero) tackling their new role as parents.

The teaser features appearances by regulars Raymond Holt (Andre Braugher), Terry Jeffords (Terry Crews), Rosa Diaz (Stephanie Beatriz), and Amy Santiago, so anticipate lots more 99th Precinct buffoonery (Melissa Fumero).

Except for Jake, none of them will go out with a whimper. Meanwhile, back in February, Brooklyn Nine-Nine fans called for that long-overdue Bruce Willis cameo to finally happen in season 8. Crews said last year that all episodes of season eight had been reworked in response to the Black Lives Matter movement.

The actor also said that the movement prompted crucial discussions on-site. “We’ve had a lot of sad discussions and serious chats about it,” Crews added. “And we hope that by doing so, we will be able to create something genuinely new this year.”

After many coronavirus-related delays, production on the show’s eighth and final season began in April of this year.
