Disney CEO Bob Iger and actor Dwayne Johnson made the official announcement that the tale of Moana and Maui would be brought back to the big screen in a live-action retelling about four months ago. Recently, a trailer showing Johnson and the titular character—none other than Zendaya—has gone viral online.

This “teaser trailer” was made by fans and is in no way associated with Disney. This hasn’t stopped the trailer from becoming viral on social media, though. On YouTube, the video has over 100,000 views, while on TikTok, the trailer has thousands of likes and views.

The announcement that Moana (2016) will soon receive the live-action treatment was made at the beginning of April by CEO Bob Iger, who then presented wrestler-turned-actor Dwayne Johnson, who is from the Hawaiian island of O’ahu. Johnson, who most recently played Frank Wolff in Jungle Cruise (2021), said that all of the beloved Disney animated characters, including Moana, Maui, Hei Hei, Pua, Gramma Tala, and Te Fiti, would be making a comeback in this version.

Johnson’s character Maui has not yet been included in the official cast list, but he is anticipated to return in the demigod role as of the time of publication. Auli’i Cravalho, who played Moana’s main character, stated earlier this year via Instagram that she would not be a part of the live-action version but would instead serve as executive producer.
