How VMA voting works

A professional group of music video directors, producers, and record industry executives originally chose the winners. Since 2006, spectators can choose the award winners.

The most wonderful aspect of VMA is that fans get to choose the winners! Fans can vote for their favourite celebrities via the official website of MTV and submit votes for various categories. The best part of this voting system is that they can submit as many votes as they like! Followers can cast unlimited votes in some of the most prestigious categories including Best Hip-Hop, Best Collaboration, Best Rock and more!

MTV announces the winner after tallying the votes. However, the VMAs reserve the right to choose the winners if the voting is hampered or disrupted. The VMAs have declared that they “hold all rights to cancel, terminate, amend, modify, prolong or suspend the voting process and reserves the right in its sole discretion to decide the winners,” further emphasising that MTV/VMAs are ultimately in charge of choosing the winners.

They also have a ‘Professional committee for categories like Best Direction, Best Visual Effects, Best Cinematography, Best Choreography, and Best Editing. Little information is disclosed by VMAs on the members of the committee and the factors contributing to their judgements.
