The MTV Video Music Awards, more popularly known as VMAs, is an
award presented by the cable channel MTV to honour extraordinary artists in the
music-video industry. The much coveted 2022 VMAs will be hosted by Nicki Minaj,
Jack Harlow and LL Cool J. The annual show is set to start on 28th August at
Prudential Center in Newark, New Jersey on Sunday.

There will be pre-show musical performances by Dove Cameron, Saucy Santana and Yung Gravy. Rumours say that Johnny Depp might make a surprise appearance at the show.

What are VMAs?

The first MTA Music Awards was held in 1984 in Radio City Music
Hall (New York), which was marked by breathtaking performances by Madonna,
Michael Jackson, David Bowie, the Beatles, and Cindy Lauper to name a few.

The show was hosted by the Ghostbuster star Dan Aykroyd and the
Hollywood singer-actress of Wind Beneath My Wings, Bette Midler. The VMAs soon
become one of the most watched shows by millions of teens and 20-something-year-olds across the globe.

The show celebrates artistic brilliance in music videos and hosts over 25
categories including Best Cinematography, Best Editing, Song of the Year, Video
of the Year, Best Pop and Best Rock. The VMAs are often considered the twin of
the Grammy Awards, especially in the video category. The annual show is watched
by millions of music enthusiasts across the world and has been often called the
Superbowl for youth.

The statue awarded to recipients is a representation of an
astronaut on the moon or Moonman. But in 2017, MTV’s President announced that the
statue would be known as a Moon Person.

The silver statue is made by a New York-based company called
Society Awards. Since the 2006 event, viewers have had the option to vote
online for their favourite videos in all general categories.

The annual VMAs ceremony takes place in late August or
mid-September and is broadcast live on MTV as well as through live streams on
MTV’s sibling networks to eliminate internal competition. Typically, the
ceremony takes place in Los Angeles or New York City. But Miami and Las Vegas
have also held the festivities.
