James Gunn, the director of films like Guardians of the Galaxy and Suicide Squad, has been appointed as a co-chairman and co-CEO of DC Studios along with Peter Safran, the DC Films producer.

The duo will report to David Zaslav, the President and CEO of Warner Discovery. Gun and Safran will now get to chart the course of the DC Universe across movies, television shows, and animated content. Besides Zaslav, Gunn and Safran will also have to work in close association with Mike De Luca and Pam Abdy, who are the Co-Chairs and CEOs of Warner Bros Film Group.

The new DC Studios’ heads will start work officially from November 1, 2022. Gunn will now no longer be able to be associated with any Marvel project, and will only be directing DC films or TV shows. However, he does have a couple of Marvel projects that are scheduled to release. Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3, directed by Gunn, is set to hit the theatres on May 5, 2023. He has also directed a Guardians of the Galaxy Christmas special that will be out this year.

According to a report published by Deadline, Safran, who also runs the production company, the Safran Company, did not want to become the head of DC Studios unless there was a creative face alongside him. This is what drove Zaslav to bring Gunn into the picture. The two of them were earlier helping Zaslav find the bosses to find the new DC boss before being roped in themselves.

Search for new executives has not yet ended for Zaslav, who started a massive reshuffle after becoming the new boss of the Warner Discovery conglomerate. He is now looking for a new appointee to head Warner Bros. Animation.
