Vison Massif located?

Vinson
Massif, also known as ‘Mount Vinson’ is located near the Ronne Ice Shelf in the
southern part of the Antarctic Peninsula in the Ellsworth Mountains. It
comprises two sub-ranges, the Sentinel Range in the north and the Heritage Range
in the south.

Who is
Vison Massif named after?

Vinson
Massif, or Mount Vinson, is named after US Representative Carl Vinson. A representative
from Georgia, Carl Vinson served in the US Congress from 1935 to 1961. Vinson
was chairman of the House Armed Services Committee. The US representative
championed for government funding for American exploration of Antarctica.

How high
is the highest peak of Vison Massif?

The peak of
Vinson Massif has an elevation of 16,066 feet (4,897 meters). Surprisingly, the
highest peak did not have a name until 2006. It was only known as part of a
group of mountains known as Vinson Massif.

How cold
is Vinson Massif?

Temperatures
in the Ellsworth Mountains where Vinson Massif is located averages around -30°C,
making it the coldest of the Seven Summits in Antarctica. The best period for climbing
the peak is between December and February when temperatures rise to -20°C.

How much
does it cost to climb Mount Vinson?

According
to travel websites, climbing the peak costs over Rs 30 lakh, including a Rs 3
lakh deposit, for a 20-day period. The costs are this high because of the
remoteness of the location.
