Energy house

Power house of a cell

Answer: Power house of a cell

Aside from cellular respiration, mitochondria play an important role in the ageing process and the onset of degenerative disease.

A series of chemical reactions occur in the cytoplasm when breakdown products from food digestion end up into the cell. This enables some of the energy trapped in these products to be released and incorporated into ATP, the cell’s universal energy source (adenosine triphosphate).

The remaining molecular fragments from this procedure then enter the mitochondria, where they are transformed to carbon dioxide and water through a complex series of steps. The energy that has been trapped in these fragments is converted into more ATP.
