Mercury

Answer: Copper

Copper has the chemical symbol Cu and the atomic number 29. It is a soft, malleable, ductile metal with excellent thermal and electrical conductivity. A freshly exposed pure copper surface is pinkish-orange in color. Copper is employed as a heat and electricity conductor, a building material, and a part of numerous metal alloys, such as sterling silver in jewelry, cupronickel in maritime hardware and coinage, and constantan in strain gauges and thermocouples for temperature monitoring.

One of the few metals that can naturally arise in a state that is immediately useable is copper (native metals). In various areas, this led to extremely early human use starting around 8000 BC. A few thousand years later, it was the first metal to be smelted from sulfide ores, the first metal to be cast into a shape in a mold, the first metal to be intentionally alloyed with another metal, tin, to make bronze, and the first metal to be cast into a shape in a mold.

Copper was mostly mined on Cyprus during the Roman era, which is where the name cuprum (later corrupted to aes cyprium, “metal of Cyprus”) originated (Latin). This gave rise to the Old English words coper and copper, the latter of which was first used in 1530.

Copper(II) salts are frequently found chemicals that are utilized as pigments because they frequently provide minerals like azurite, malachite, and turquoise blue or green hues.

When copper is used in structures, typically for roofing, it oxidizes and turns green (or patina). Both in the form of a compound as a pigment and as an elemental metal, copper is occasionally employed in decorative art. As fungicides, bacteriostatic agents, and wood preservatives, copper compounds are employed.
