Mike Shannon, renowned radio broadcaster and two-time World Series champion for the St Louis Cardinals, has died. He was 83.

“Mike’s unique connection to Cardinals fans and his teammates was reflected in his unbridled passion for the game, the Cardinals, and the St. Louis community,” Cardinals owner Bill DeWitt Jr said in a statement.

However, his cause of death has not been disclosed yet.

Age

Mike Shannon was born on July 15, 1931, in St Louis, Missouri, US. He was the second of six children of Thomas A Shannon and Elizabeth W Richason Shannon. He died at the age of 83. Mike’s father was a police officer and worked in the prosecuting attorney’s office before becoming a Prosecuting Attorney for the City of St Louis in the early 1970s.

Career

Mike Shannon spent 60 years with the Cardinals, including 50 years as the radio broadcasts team member. He made his big league debut with the Cardinals in 1962. He patrolled base and outfield for nine seasons. Shannon won World Series titles in 1964 and 1967.

Shanno’s baseball career was cut short because of a kidney disease. In 1972, he made his Cardinals Radio Network debut alongside Hall of Fame broadcaster Jack Buck.

In 2002, Shannon officially became the Cardinals’ lead radio voice after Buck’s demise. He achieved a remarkable milestone of 50 years in broadcasting in 2021, retiring from the KMOX airwaves after that season.

Recently, he was recognized by the National Baseball Hall of Fame as a finalist for the prestigious Ford C Frick broadcasting award. In 2014, Shannon was officially inducted into the St Louis Cardinals Hall of Fame. He received his first Emmy Award for sports broadcasting in 1985.

Throughout his career, Shannon appeared for the Cardinals on their television broadcasts and was a pre-game analyst for Fox Sports Midwest.

As a player, Shannon hit .255 with 68 home runs and 367 RBI. In 1967, he recorded his best regular-season campaign, when hit .266 with 15 home runs, 79 RBI. He earned a seventh-place finish in NL MVP voting.
