British fashion designer and style icon Vivienne Westwood has died aged 81. Westwood died “peacefully, surrounded by her family” in Clapham, south London on Thursday, her fashion house said in a statement.

Westwood, a former primary school teacher, rose to fame in the 1970s. Her provocative and sometimes controversial designs came to define the punk aesthetic.

Her husband and creative partner, Andreas Kronthaler, said “I will continue with Vivienne in my heart. We have been working until the end and she has given me plenty of things to get on with. Thank you darling.”

In 1961, Vivienne met Derek Westwood, a Hoover factory apprentice, and married him—wearing her own design in 1962. They had a son together, Benjamin Westwood, born in 1963, but separated when he was three.

Benjamin Westwood was born in Edgware, North London. However, for most of his life, he has lived south of the river Thames. He is a professional photographer and travels internationally to pursue his specific interest in erotic images, colorful culture, and adventure. Benjamin has already published two books and held several exhibitions of his work.

After meeting then-art student and former manager of Sex Pistols Malcolm McLaren, she gave birth to her second son Joseph Corre in 1967. Corre was born in Clapham, south London. His surname was not adopted but given at birth, derived from his father’s maternal grandmother, a Sephardic Jew from Portugal. As a child, he wore his mother’s designs and regards the Sex Pistols as his favorite band.

Corre is an activist and a businessman, who co-founded Agent Provocateur in 1994. He met Serena Rees, now ex-wife and former business partner, in 1992 at a nightclub. The couple divorced in 2007 and have one daughter together. They were awarded the MBE (Member of the Order of the British Empire) in the 2007 Queen’s Birthday Honors List for their services to the fashion industry.

He declined his honor of an MBE in June 2007 for his services to the fashion industry. “To accept this MBE as an honor would mean to me that I would have to accept the prime minister as someone capable of giving an honor i.e. an honorable man, which I cannot find it in my heart to do,” he said.
