Sibling rivalry is a type of competition or animosity that can happen for several reasons, ranging from poor family dynamics to lack of attention. As parents from around the world look for solutions online, an Indian American writer, on June 2, took to Twitter to explain her trick to stop the kids from hitting each other.

Diksha Basu explained that her trick gets the children to stop thinking about hitting each other all day long resulting in it actually stopping (for good).

She wrote, “told my kids they were allowed to hit each other once per day so they should really think it through and not waste their one hit and now they’re calmly discussing when might be the best time to hit each other”.

This is a trick actually used by therapists to help ease the patient’s anxiety. By allowing them to think about an issue only once, they are distracted from it for the rest of the day. This exercise helps the brain gain more control over their thoughts.

As the tweet went viral, many commented their own tricks to tackle the issue. One said that by only allowing the kids to fight in the English language and not their mother tongue the fights were cut short.

Another commented how it works on older kids as well.

As the audience engaged with the tweet, it received over 38,000 comments at the time this article was posted. Diksha Basu, originally from Delhi is the author of the critically acclaimed novel ‘The Windfall’ which is currently under adaptation for a television show by Shonali Bose
