Amazon
Studios
has finally announced the release dates of the Rings of Power series.
The eight-part series cost over $715 million to produce which has shocked many
but has left LOTR fans excited about the plot.  The much-awaited series
will premiere on September 1 in US and Canada and will be widely available to
all Prime Video subscribers from September 2, 2022.

The
multi-season story focuses on the Second Age, a period of peace in Middle-earth
before one of the greatest evils overcame it and wreaked havoc. In this tale,
viewers will discover how the 20 magical rings of power were made. For elves,
there were three rings; for dwarves, seven; for mankind, nine; and to rule
every living creature in the universe there was only one.

A battle
of power, lore enmeshed in war, blood and greed to rule, Rings of Power offers
insight into the development of several characters including Galadriel, Elrond,
Elanor, Oren and King Gil-galad.

What is the Second Age

In
J.R.R. Tolkien’s mythology, major, world-altering events more or less always
mark the beginning and end of each Age. In this instance, the War of Wrath,
also known as the greatest conflict to ever rock Middle-earth, ends the First
Age and ushers in the Second Age. In it, the Valar—a pantheon of lesser gods
that rule over Middle-earth and report directly to Ilvatar, the
“real” God in Tolkien’s universe—led a massive army against Morgoth,
the first Dark Lord and the most powerful of these lesser gods.

The
Second Age lasted for 3,441 years during which The One Ring was created. This
period is defined by the rise of Numenor and Sauron in Middle-Earth, the first
appearance of the Ringwraiths, and the first Ring Wars between Sauron and the
Elves.

3,500 years is a long time to cover and it is unclear what
events will be covered in the show. Elrond and Sauron are two examples of
several immortal characters who remain alive throughout the Second Age.
However, the Second Age’s foundation rests in the hearts of Men.
