Olivia Isabel Rodrigo or Olivia Rodrigo, who won the Best New Artist of the Year Award at the MTV Video Music Awards 2021 on Sunday (ET), is an American singer, songwriter and actor. She is known for her roles as Paige Olvera on the Disney Channel series ‘Bizaardvark’ and as Nini Salazar-Roberts on the Disney+ mockumentary series ‘High School Musical: The Musical: The Series.’

Rodrigo first appeared onscreen in an Old Navy commercial. In 2015, when
she was about 11 or 12, Rodrigo made her acting debut in the lead role of Grace
Thomas in the direct-to-video film ‘An American Girl: Grace Stirs Up Success.’ In
2016, Rodrigo received recognition for starring as Paige Olvera, a guitarist in
the Disney Channel series Bizaardvark. She played Paige Olvera for three
running seasons of the show.

Rodrigo, who was called 2021’s biggest break-out star is often
associated with terms like pop, pop-rock, teen pop, alternative pop and
bubblegum pop artist for her choice and style of music.

The ‘Sour’ singer considers pop star Taylor Swift and Lorde, her music inspirations and called herself Swift’s “biggest fan in the whole world.”

Rodrigo mainstream musical journey started when she signed
with Interscope Records and Geffen Records in 2020. She negotiated the record
deal to secure her the ownership of the masters of her music.

On January 8, 2021, Rodrigo released her debut single,
“Driver’s License”, which was co-written with producer Dan Nigro. ‘Driver’s
License’ was an instant hit among the fans and gained accolades from the music
critics as well within the week of its release.

Rodrigo’s debut album broke music platform Spotify’s record twice for the most daily streams ever for a non-holiday song with over 15.7 million global streams on January 11, and over 17 million global streams the next day. ‘Driver’s License’ broke another Spotify record with the historical 80 million streams in 7 days.

The song also debuted at number one on Billboard Hot 100 and ranked number-one in various others countries as well. Describing the success of her debut album, Rodrigo in
an interview said, “It’s been the absolute craziest week of my life … My
entire life just, like, shifted in an instant.”

Rodrigo released her second song ‘Deja Vu’ in April 2021 and it debuted at number eight on the Billboard Hot 100 right after the release. The success of her first two albums made Rodrigo the first artist to have her debutant albums displayed at Billboard’s Top 100.

The ‘Sour’ artist’s third single ‘Good 4 U”, released on May 14, 2021, became her second single to debut at number one on the Hot 100.

Then came her first studio album ‘Sour’, which was released in May 2021. Charlie Gunn of The Forty-Five called it “the greatest coming-of-age album since early Taylor Swift or Lorde”.

Olivia Rodrigo was also a part of President Joe Biden‘s vaccination awareness programme and visited the White House to boost the Biden administration’s plan to vaccinate Americans against COVID-19. Rodrigo said that she was in awe of the efforts that the United States government had been making to get its citizens vaccinated.
