Winston, a French bulldog bagged the top spot at the 21st
annual National Dog Show presented by Purina. According to Purnia, around 20
million people watched Winston take the Best in Show title at the 2022 National
Dog Show, hosted by the Kennel Club of Philadelphia with his handler Perry
Payson of Bixby, Oklahoma. Winston beat out hundreds of other dogs from several
breeds to win the grand prize.

“He is a show dog with personality and beauty and a
perfect fit for the breed,” Vicki Seiler-Cushman, the 2022 National Dog
Show’s Best In Show judge, said in a statement. “He has a razzle-dazzle
that says, ‘I am here to win tonight.’ You can just tell that he can also go
home and be the perfect pet,” he added.

Who is Winston?

Winston is a 3-year-old cream-colored French bulldog. The dog
the first French bulldog to win the Best In Show title since the show became
part of NBC’s Thanksgiving Day lineup in 2022.

Winston was also the reserve Best In Show, or first
runner-up, at the 2022 Westminster Kennel Club dog show in June this year.
Winston came into the competition ranked the number 1 all-breed canine in the
United States.

The dog’s ownership group includes NFL player Morgan Fox.
The Los Angeles Chargers defensive end raised Winston as a puppy. Winston’s
competition name is GCHP Fox Canyon’s I Won The War at Goldshield.

Perry Payson, the handler is also Winston’s breeder and
another co-owner. The French Bulldog now has 78 career best-in-shows. “I get
excited every time and so does Winston,” Payson said at the Pennsylvania event.
Payson has shown French dogs since 1980s, but he exclusively works with Winston
these days.

French bulldogs have increased in popularity over the past
few years. They were the number 2 breed in the United States in 2021 and 2020,
second to Labrador retrievers, which have held the number 1 position since
1991, According to American Kennel Club registrations for purebred dogs.

Winston did his part to make the breed see some more years
at the top spot of the list.
