Carol Sutton’s legacy is being honoured by the Outer Banks cast and crew in season two. The actress, who played Pope’s meemaw in the second season, died of COVID-19 complications in December 2020 at the age of 76. The Netflix series was one of her final undertakings before her death, thus it pays respect to her with an in memoriam statement at the end of season two’s sixth episode, “My Druthers.”

Sutton, best known for her roles in Steel Magnolias and Ray, a 2004 biopic, had lately starred in Lovecraft Country, Messiah, Roots, and True Detective. Sutton appeared in American Horror Story, 21 Jump Street, Inside Out, Pride, Scream: The TV Series, and Scream Queens, among other notable series and films, throughout her 46-year acting career.

Viewers meet Pope‘s (played by Jonathan Davis) meemaw when he goes to her assisted living facility to learn more about their family’s history. Sutton plays Pope’s (Jonathan Davies) great-grandmother in the sixth episode of Outer Banks season two, revealing a shocking family secret she’s held for years regarding the mystery key Pope has been hunting for. 

Although Sutton only appears in one episode, her role has an impactful effect and contributes to an important season two storyline. The show concludes with a title card that states, “In loving memory of Carol Sutton,” before the credits roll and Strange by Celeste plays.

 Sutton has previously starred in TV shows such as Queen Sugar, Claws, and Treme prior to her appearance on Outer Banks. “Carol Sutton was practically the Queen of New Orleans theatre, having graced the stages around the city for decades,” stated New Orleans Mayor LaToya Cantrell. Sutton appeared in 4000 Miles and A Raisin in the Sun, in addition to her on-screen performances. Sutton’s legacy lives on in more than 100 impactful television, film, and theatrical projects she worked on during her career.
