Actor Gurdeep Kohli has created her own space on the Indian small screen thanks to strong and fierce roles like Dr. Juhi in ‘Sanjivini’ and the web series ‘Kehne ko Humsafar Hai’. The actor says that  female representation on Over The Top (OTT) platform has “become very brave.”

“They are showing women of different walks being celebrated. Also, body shaming has been put to rest.. In fact, big-size women are very happy being celebrated. These are the areas where a woman was always put down .”

However, for the small screen, she says that TV should celebrate characters that are breaking boundaries.

“ If you have aged, if you are fat or if you are very bold or you are not accepted, these are the things that need to be celebrated more on TV as everybody wants to be inspired. We have given them (audience) lots of stories of Parvatis and Juhis and Tulsis and Prernas and people have got inspired but now what?”

“Society has changed and most of the women are working but still we are judging them by their age, body type, by their colour and by their status so all this should be now put to rest and we should learn from one another. The basic is the celebration of one another. For example, if I am a working woman leaving my house behind every day in that case I should respect my house help who organizes my house after I have left and actually celebrate her and give her that importance in our lives so these are the small things that we need to look back.

“Celebrate one another, uplift one another and this is how womanhood should be now..”

She is currently seen in ‘Humkadam’ on IN10 Media Network’s Hindi General Entertainment Channel Ishara . The show follows the story of two women (mother-in-law and daughter-in-law) who build each other in an extraordinary, unprecedented situation.

Talking more about it, she says, “When I heard about the show like ‘Humkadam’ coming on the new channel, I thought it’s a good time to be part of something new … a channel also means new energies.. People being very careful …they are putting their best foot forward and you know somewhere the TV on other channels has become very mundane. I would say ‘seen before’ kind of content so there is nothing new happening. This is why I thought why not change the source now and because they were really happy to have me on board.”

“The story is really nice. Its a story about progressive mother in law and daughter in law which is a scenario everywhere now and this story has to be told so that people relate to it and give it love and make it a success and this is how it began .. this is the USP of the show that get me attracted and I got on board

She says that “TV is all about strong women but the stories were getting repetitive”

“ .. people were not experimenting and were only looking at numbers as TRP and shutting of shows. The channel’s idea is to show the audience a different progressive story which we have just been harping about on other channels and not doing anything about it.

“I can say this because I have been around and I have been seeing how the promos are shot and how the story is narrated and finally it ends up being the same mundane thing that we have seen before.”

She also says that as an actor, it’s her responsibility to send that message and to influence society with her shows.
