A man threw an egg at French President Emmanuel Macron during an international food trade fair in the country on Monday. The incident happened as Macron was walking through a crowd at the International Catering, Hotel and Food Trade Fair (SIRHA) in Lyon, central France. A video on social media showed the egg bouncing off Macron’s shoulder before two bodyguards rushed to secure the French president. The video then pans to the man being restrained and taken away from the scene by other bodyguards. Reporters heard Macron saying “If he has something to tell me, then he can come,” according to Associated Press.

Authorities are yet to reveal details on the man’s identity or possible motivation. Florence Lago, a journalist for French publication Lyon Mag, told CNN that the egg “bounced off Macron’s shoulder and burst on the floor right in front of me” .

A spokesperson for the French President’s official residence, Elysée Palace, told the outlet the incident was being overblown.

“The President walked around for two hours, he was warmly welcomed and everything was calm. There is nothing to say about it because it did not disrupt his walking around,” the spokesperson, who said he was with Macron at the time, added. “I was next to the President, I can tell you there is no story.”

In June, Macron received support from politicians across the ideological spectrum after a man slapped him as he was greeting the public in a small town in southeastern France. Macron denounced the incident as an act of “violence” and “stupidity.”

The 43-year-old has not announced his reelection bid for France’s presidential elections due to be held next April. His party performed poorly in regional elections held in June.
