India recorded 1,68,063 new COVID-19 cases and 277 deaths in the last 24 hours, data from the Union Health Ministry confirmed on Tuesday. India’s total infection tally has now reached 3,58,75,790, with the death toll pushed to 4,84,213. 

India has detected 4,461 cases of the omicron variant of the coronavirus across 28 states and Union Territories (UTs) so far, of which 1,711 have recovered. Maharashtra has detected the highest number of omicron cases across all states and UTs so far, 1,247. 

Meanwhile, active cases have increased by 97,827 to 8,21,446. They comprise 2.29% of the total caseload.

69,959 patients recovered from the infection in the last 24 hours, taking the total number of recoveries to 3,45,70,131. The national recovery rate stands at 96.36%, against a mortality rate of 1.35%.

According to data from the Indian Council of Medical Reasearch (ICMR), a total of 69,31,55,280 samples have been tested up to January 10, of which 15,79,928 were tested yesterday. 

The daily positivity rate has shot up to 10.64%, while the weekly positivity rate has been recorded at 8.85%.

India’s cumulative vaccination tally has reached 1,52,89,70,294, after 92,07,700 doses were administered in the last 24 hours. India’s mass vaccination campaign was launched on January 16 last year by Prime Minister Narendra Modi. 

India has also administered 9,84,676 ‘precaution doses’, or booster doses, of the COVID vaccine. India’s booster dose campaign was launched on January 10.

India’s COVID-19 tally had crossed the 20-lakh mark on August 7, 2020, 30 lakh on August 23, 40 lakh on September 5 and 50 lakh on September 16. It went past 60 lakh on September 28, 70 lakh on October 11, crossed 80 lakh on October 29, 90 lakh on November 20 and surpassed the one-crore mark on December 19. India crossed the grim milestone of two crore on May 4 and three crore on June 23.
