Indian skipper Virat Kohli roared back to form in the second Twenty20 International against England, notching his 26th half-century and becoming the first player to score 3,000 runs in the shortest format at Ahmedabad’s Narendra Modi Stadium on Sunday.

Kohli registered a duck in the series opener at the same venue on Friday, the first time-ever in his glittering career that he had been dismissed without scoring in consecutive international matches. The 32-year-old also registered a duck in the fourth and final Test against England at the same venue.

Chasing a target of 165 runs, India got off to a shaky start with KL Rahul disappointing for the second match running, as he was dismissed for a duck.

However, Kohli forged a 94-run partnership with debutant Ishan Kishan, who also notched a half-century, to put India in the driver’s seat. The skipper struck five fours and three maximums in his innings.

Kohli brought up his fifty with a six off his 35th delivery, dancing down the track to meet a half-tracker from Tom Curran on the full, slapping it for a low six over mid-off.

Kohli also became the first cricketer to score 3,000 T20I runs.

Having won the toss and chosen to field, Kohli and Kishan’s knocks helped India level the series with a seven-wicket win in the second T20I.

Earlier, Jason Roy (46) led the scoring as England put up a competitive total of 164 for the loss of six wickets from their 20 overs, with David Malan (24), Jonny Bairstow (20), skipper Eoin Morgan (28) and Ben Stokes (24) unable to capitalise on starts.
