Meghalaya

Manipur

Arunachal Pradesh

Assam

Answer: Assam

Judima, the first traditional brew of northeast India to get a GI tag, is from the state of Assam.

Judima is essentially a fermented drink made up of rice. It gets it name from “Ju” meaning wine and ‘Dima’ meaning ‘belonging to Dimasa.’

For the Dimasa tribe, the drink has been a part of their tradition since years. It is served at various important occasions such as birth ceremonies and marriages. Off late, it has also started to be served during normal assemblies of guests.

The credit for the GI tag should go to Uttam Bathari, managing trustee of Youth Association for Development and Empowerment (YADEM), who initiated the GI proposal in 2018. “Following suggestions that it would be better to apply through a women’s group (since judima is traditionally made by women), we formed a group called Dimajik Hosom (Dimasa women’s organisation) and reapplied for the tag in 2019 along with YADEM,” explains Uttam.
