Answer- Assam
The Kaziranga National Park is located in Assam, India. It is spread across two districts, Golaghat and Nagaon. It is a world heritage site for hosting close to 70% of all one-horned rhinoceroses in the world. The one-horned rhinoceroses were on the verge of being extinct after being hunted for sport or killed as agricultural pests for many years.
In March 2018, the Forest Department of the Government of Assam along with a few wildlife NGOs conducted a census of the one-horned rhinoceroses. They reported that there are 2,423 one-horned rhinoceroses at the Kaziranga National Park.
The Kaziranga National Park is one of the most successful one-horned rhinoceroses preservation experiments in South Asia. In 2015, the park had a rhino population of 2401, which increased by 22 during the 2019 count. The rhinos have been preserved successfully with efforts from both the Indian and Nepalese governments.
The 2019 count showed that out of the 2,423 rhinos at the Kaziranga National Park, 1,641 are adults (642 males, 793 females, 206 unsexed), 387 are sub-adults, and 385 are calves.
While the park is known mainly for the one-horned rhinoceroses, it is also a large breeding ground for elephants, swamp deer, and water buffalo. The area has been recognized as an “Important Bird Area” by BirdLife International.
Several bird species are preserved at the park, such as the Blyth’s Kingfisher Alcedo Hercules, the Pale-capped Pigeon Columba Punicea, and the Bengal Florican Houbaropsis Bengalensis.
