Buddha Purnima, also known as Buddha Jayanti, celebrates the birth of Gautama Buddha. The day, considered to be auspicious by many, falls this year on May 26.  In 2021, Buddha Purnima, also known as Buddha Jayanti, will mark the 2,583rd birth anniversary of Lord Buddha.

Due to Buddha being born on a Purnima Tithi (full moon day) in the year 623 BC, the day usually falls on a full moon day in the month of Vaisakhi (April/May) in India. In the Southeast Asian region, Lord Buddha%u2019s birth is celebrated as a part of Vesak, marking his enlightenment.

The day is commemorated in both Buddhist and Hindu communities, being celebrated majorly in countries such as India, Nepal, Bhutan, Myanmar, Thailand, Cambodia etc.

Significance:

While every full moon is considered auspicious in Buddhism, the full moon in May marks three special occassions, namely: His birth in Lumbini (modern day terai region in Nepal), becoming Gautama Buddha after attaining enlightenment under the Bodhi tree in Bodh Gaya, and lastly dying reportedly at the age of 45 after attaining Nirvana.

Celebrating Buddha Purnima, followers around the world offer their prayers, fast, and have discussions pertaining to the life and teachings of Lord Buddha. Many events are organised online, through which one can join such discussions and meditation sessions.

Happy Buddha Purnima!
