In yet another chapter in the infighting in Punjab Congress, Chief Minister Amarinder Singh is likely to meet party president Sonia Gandhi on Tuesday, reports PTI quoting sources. The party leadership has been trying to douse the fire that comes months ahead of the assembly elections due early next year.

Amarinder Singh and Congress leader Navjot Singh Sidhu have indulged in public spats attacking each other over issues like the alleged delay in the completion of a probe into the 2015 desecration of Sikh texts and the subsequent police firing on protesters, power tariff and farm protests.

Sidhu reportedly had sought a plumper post in the party. He is said to be keen on being made a deputy chief minister or party president. Both options have reportedly been turned down by Singh. As the spats between the two got uglier, party top brass had to intervene and Gandhi set up a panel, led by  Mallikarjun Kharge, to look into the matter.

The panel submitted a report and asked Amarinder to deliver on 18 pending promises, including on the 2015 sacrilege issue and power purchase agreements signed by the previous government. Amarinder Singh was in Delhi twice earlier to meet the panel but did not meet the Gandhis.

A few days back, Sidhu came to Delhi and met Congress leaders Rahul Gandhi and Priyanka Gandhi Vadra. Rahul Gandhi has also met several party leaders, including legislators from Punjab, for their views on what is needed to strengthen the party ahead of the 2022 assembly polls.

The Sidhu-Singh rift dates back to 2019, when the former resigned as a minister in Punjab after being divested of the Local Bodies portfolio in 2019.
