Delhi Capitals leg-spinner Amit Mishra’s 13th season of the Indian Premier League has come to an abrupt end after he fractured his ring finger during the match against Kolkata Knight Riders at Sharjah.

The 37-year-old sustained the tendon injury while going for a low return catch floated by Kolkata Knight Riders batsman Nitish Rana in the October 3 game.

Although Mishra seemed to be in considerable pain, the veteran slogged away to bowl two overs during which he dismissed the on-song Shubman Gill.

Even with Sharjah’s concerningly short boundaries, which most bowlers seem to struggle with, Mishra looked unplayable as he retired hurt after his two overs with figures of 2-0-14-1.

“Amit has fractured his ring finger and is out of the IPL tournament. Obviously, it is a very disappointing news considering he was integral to DC’s plans,” said a source from Mishra’s management team, confirming the development to PTI.

He is set to travel back to India for recovery and rehabilitation.

After the KKR match, Delhi skipper Shreyas Iyer too lamented the spinner’s absence. “Unfortunate to lose Mishra in the middle when he was spinning the ball really well. We were confident we had two good overs left, but anything could happen, it is a funny game is T20s and especially here in Sharjah,” Iyer said in the post-match press conference.

This season, the Delhi-born leggie played only three games and took 2 for 25 against SRH apart from his 1/14 against KKR. He was also brilliant against CSK despite going wicket-less for 23 runs in 4 overs.

With160 scalps, Mishra is the second-highest wicket-taker in the history of IPL, just 10 behind Lasith Malinga (170), who too had to opt-out due to personal reasons this year.

Delhi Capitals will be looking to quickly fill the void left by the experienced spinner.
