At least 50 people died in the torrential rains and flash floods that have battered Telangana in the last few days, the state government said on Thursday.

Eleven of the deaths were reported from the Greater Hyderabad Municipal Corporation (GHMC) area, officials said at a review meeting held by Chief Minister K Chandrasekhar Rao.

Giving a sigh of relief to people in the state, there were no rains on Thursday and water started receding in most parts of the Greater Hyderabad Municipal Corporation (GHMC) limits, though some localities still remained inundated.

Citing preliminary estimates, Rao said the state suffered losses to the tune of over Rs 5,000 crore due to the heavy rains that led to the flooding of several low-lying areas on Wednesday with the state capital bearing the worst hit.

The Telangana Rashtra Samithi leader has written to Prime Minister Narendra Modi urging him to release Rs 1,350 crore immediately for relief and rehabilitation works, the release added.

The heavy rains that wreaked havoc across the southern states originated due to a deep depression in the Bay of Bengal.

Earlier in the day, a 50-year-old mailman’s dead body was fished out of Nagole lake, which was overflowing with rainwater following the downpour in the last two days.

Municipal Administration Minister KT Rama Rao, who held a review meeting on the flood situation in the city, urged the officials to take up all necessary measures to address the situation arising out of the deluge.

Observing that there was a likelihood of a sudden outbreak of epidemics and the spread of water-borne diseases, he said medical camps should be set up in the city.

The 104 ambulance service equipped with doctors and medicines should also be arranged at all the places, he said.

Around 44,000 people were put up in 64 relief camps and 45,000 food packets were provided, an official release quoted him as saying.
