Petrol and diesel prices went up for the fourth straight day across India on Friday, May 7, 2021. In national capital Delhi, the price of petrol rose by 28 paise to Rs 91.27 per litre while the price of diesel increased by 31 paise to Rs 81.73 per litre, according to Indian Oil Corporation.

Prior to these consecutive revisions, fuel prices remained unchanged for 18 days with the previous revision taking place on April 15, 2021.

Petrol price scaled to Rs 102 per litre in some parts of Rajasthan and Madhya Pradesh. This is the second time this year that rates in some parts have crossed the Rs 100 mark – they had breached the physiological mark for the first time in mid-February.

Fuel prices differ from state to state depending on the incidence of local taxes such as VAT and freight charges. Rajasthan levies the highest value-added tax (VAT) on petrol in the country, followed by Madhya Pradesh.

In Mumbai, petrol and diesel prices have been revised at Rs 97.61 per litre and Rs 88.82 per litre respectively. Currently, financial capital Mumbai is seeing the largest hikes in fuel prices among the four metro cities.

Petrol and diesel prices in Chennai now stand at Rs 93.15 per litre and Rs 86.65 per litre respectively. In Kolkata, petrol is now retailing at Rs 91.41 per litre while diesel is selling at Rs 84.57 per litre.

The revisions in fuel prices are implemented with effect from 6 am each day. Indian Oil Corporation, Bharat Petroleum and Hindustan Petroleum align the rates of domestic fuel with the global crude oil prices.
