World Voice Day is exactly what it sounds like, and so much more.
Observed on April 16 it not only celebrates the phenomenon and value of voice
but also aims to promote global awareness about vocal diseases.

World Voice Day 2022 Theme

‘Lift your voice’ is the theme of this year’s World Voice Day campaign.
The campaign’s motto was developed by the American Academy of
Otolaryngology – Head and Neck Surgery (AAO-HNS) to emphasize how maintaining a
healthy voice quality helps improve communication abilities.

History

A group of voice care specialists in Brazil started the World Voice Day
celebrations. On April 16, 1999, the Brazilian Society of Laryngology and Voice,
chaired by Dr. Nedio Steffen, declared the day as Brazilian Voice Day. In
addition to the United States, Portugal and Argentina also honoured the
day.

In 2002, the American Academy of Otolaryngology – Head and Neck Surgery
started to commemorate the day and it was officially
declared as World Voice Day in 2003.

Significance

The significance of World Voice Day lies in its efforts to
raise awareness about the importance of preventing vocal difficulties and
rehabilitating persons who have them. It also addresses the preventative
actions that people should take in order to overcome such issues. Another goal
is to assist people in seeking aid and training in order to support voice
skills research.

Many articles about the importance of the human voice and the need of
preventative healthcare may be found on the World Voice Day website. Many
people abuse their voices by drinking, smoking, and shouting.  However,
with certain good habits and healthy practices, any type of vocal stress or
sickness can be remedied.

Many doctors and researchers come forward on this day to discuss those
who are working to tackle voice-related issues.

Tips to maintain your vocal health

This World Voice Day, we give you some useful tips for keeping your
voice in good shape.

  1. Do
    not smoke.
  2. When
you lose your voice temporarily, try to speak gently rather than loudly,
as doing so might irritate the vocal folds even more.
  3. Keep
    yourself hydrated.
  4. The
vocal folds can be damaged by excessive throat clearing and coughing. So
make sure to take more fluids to prevent build up in your throat, thus
preventing the need for throat clearing.
  5. Caffeine
and alcohol should be consumed in moderation.
