Former Indian captain MS Dhoni announced his retirement in an Instagram video on Saturday. He thanked everyone for their love and support.

“Thanks a lot for ur love and support throughout. from 1929hrs consider me as retired,” Dhoni captioned the four-minute long video, which is a montage of key moments of his career.

Reactions poured in moments after the World Cup winning captain made the announcement.

Cricketer Suresh Raina, who was the vice-captain of the Indian team when Dhoni led it, took cue from his announcement and followed the decision.

“It was nothing but lovely playing with you, @mahi7781 . With my heart full of pride, I choose to join you in this journey. Thank you India. Jai Hind,” he said while sharing a photo of the Indian cricket team on Instagram.

Virat Kohli, the current captain of the team, thanked him for everything in an Instagram post.

“Every cricketer has to end his journey one day, but still when someone you’ve gotten to know so closely announces that decision, you feel the emotion much more. What you’ve done for the country will always remain in everyone’s heart, but the mutual respect and warmth I’ve received from you will always stay in mine. The world has seen achievements, I’ve seen the person. Thanks for everything skip. I tip my hat to you.”

Sachin Tendulkar took to Twitter to wish him the best.

“Your contribution to Indian cricket has been immense, @msdhoni. Winning the 2011 World Cup together has been the best moment of my life. Wishing you and your family all the very best for your 2nd innings.”

Former cricketer Virender Sehwag said, “Players will come and go but there won’t be a calmer man like him. Dhoni with his connect with people having aspirations was like a family member to many cricket lovers.”

Former skipper and BCCI President Sourav Ganguly said, “He has set the standards for the wicketkeepers to come and make a mark for the country. He will finish with no regrets on the field. An outstanding career; I wish him the best in life.”

Dhoni’s contemporary, Shikhar Dhawan said in a tweet, “Captain. Leader. Legend. Thanks Mahi bhai for everything you have done for the country!”

Prominent cricket commentator Harsha Bhogle shared Dhoni’s video on Twitter and said, “The great man says goodbye?”

Not just sports personalities, politicians too thanked Dhoni for his contributions to Indian cricket.

Union Minister Smriti Irani tweeted, ”

Thank you for the magic #Dhoni.”

Member of Parliament Sashi Tharoor called him a “true giant of the game”.

Mahendra Singh Dhoni is regarded as an ODI legend, with  10,773 runs, averaging more than 50, even though he largely walked into the crease between No. 5 and No. 7 to bat. Dhoni is the only ICC World Cup winning captain besides Kapil Dev. India won the World Cup under Dhoni in 2011.
