Answer: Pole Vault
Armand “Mondo” Duplantis was born in Louisiana in 1999. Duplantis chose to represent his mother’s native Sweden in international competition. He was born to an American pole vaulter father and a Swedish long jumper mother.
He played football and baseball growing up. He, however, chose pole vault as it gave him “the best chance to make it to the top”.
He won the under-18 title in 2015, just four months shy of turning 16 years old. Barely two years later, he smashed the under-20 world record with a clearing of 5.90m, catching the eye of the legendary Sergey Bubka.
But following their initial encounter in 2013, Duplantis’ childhood hero was another man, Renaud Lavillenie.
“I admired his pole vaulting technique. I’ve sort of always wished I could jump like him.”
In 2017, Duplantis stated. He travelled to Clermont-Ferrand that winter to train for a few days with the French Olympic champion.
The accolades kept coming, including a gold medal at the 2018 European Championships. He achieved a clearance of 6.05 metres at the competition, placing him as the fifth-best vaulter of all time. Duplantis decided to enrol at Louisiana State University, but after a year he dropped out to concentrate on his budding professional sporting career.
The 22-year-old broke his own world record by 0.01 centimetre on the final day of World Athletics Championships 2022 that were held at Hayward Field in Eugene, Oregon.
