‘Minions: The Rise of Gru
‘Minions: The Rise of Gru‘ is a 2022 American computer-animated comedy film distributed by Universal Pictures and made by Illumination. It is the follow-up to the Despicable Me franchise’s fifth overall instalment and the spin-off prequel Minions (2015).
The movie is directed by Kyle Balda with Brad Ableson and Jonathan del Val serving as co-directors.It stars Taraji P. Henson, Michelle Yeoh, RZA, Jean-Claude Van Damme, Lucy Lawless, Dolph Lundgren, Danny Trejo, Russell Brand, Julie Andrews, and Alan Arkin in addition to Steve Carell reprising his role as Gru and Pierre Coffin as the Minions.
Minions: The Rise of Gru had its global premiere on June 13, 2022, at the Annecy International Animation Film Festival.
It was then released by Universal Pictures in conventional and select IMAX cinemas in the US on July 1, 2022, after being postponed for two years due to the COVID-19 epidemic. Although the plot was criticised, the musical sequences and family-friendly entertainment won accolades from critics.
The film collected estimated $108.5 million in ticket sales from 4,391 screens in North America in its debut weekend.
“For many months there was this idea that family audiences were not going to come back to the theater. We can put that to rest,” said Paul Dergarabedian, the senior media analyst for Comscore.
While several animated family films opted for streaming or hybrid releases, “Minions” stayed the course and waited for an ideal time to launch in theaters only. And as with “Top Gun” the wait, it seems, was worth it.
“This became an event. It was a holiday weekend, the release date was perfect, the marketing was spot on,” Dergarabedian said. “And everyone knew this was going to be in theaters only.”
