Eyioma Uwazurike, a defensive end with the Denver Broncos, has been placed on indefinite suspension by the NFL for breaking its gambling policy, the league stated on Monday. The NFL said that Uwazurike wagered on sports during the 2022 campaign. He can file a request for reinstatement up to July 24, 2024.

During the NFL season, neither NFL players nor staff members are permitted to gamble while in NFL facilities, disclose any non-public NFL information, enter a sportsbook during the NFL season, or maintain any social, business, or personal relationships with sports gamblers.

On their own time, however, even throughout the season, they are allowed to make non-sports bets at casinos and horse- or dog-racing facilities that are run legally. “We were informed by the NFL [on Monday] that Eyioma Uwazurike has been suspended by the league indefinitely for violating its gambling policy,” the Broncos said in a statement.

“Our organization fully cooperated with this investigation and takes matters pertaining to the integrity of the game very seriously,” they added. “The Denver Broncos will continue to provide all members of our organization with the necessary education, resources, and support to ensure compliance with the NFL’s Gambling Policy.”

Uwazurike, a former Iowa State University football player, was scheduled to report to the Broncos’ training camp in Englewood, Colorado, on Tuesday for his second season with the organization. Uwazurike, a Broncos fourth-round drafting selection in 2022, played 165 defensive plays in eight games last season and had the chance to seek more playing time this year.

Last month, three players—free agent Demetrius Taylor, linebacker Rashod Berry, and former Indianapolis cornerback Isaiah Rodgers—were given extended suspensions for placing bets on NFL games the previous season. Rodgers and Berry were released by the Colts after being suspended.

Uwazurike was anticipated to contend for a primary backup position, or even a starting role, along Denver’s defensive line, which was already drained out by Mike Purcell’s recent inclusion on the Non-Football Injury list.
