While WWE thrives on the fighting skills of its employees, problems arise when these altercations spill over to the backstage. A former WWE writer, Brian Gewirtz, has said that he and pro-wrestling executive Paul Heyman were both suspended by the company when they got embroiled in a “slap-fight”. Gewirtz made these comments on a wrestling podcast called Cheap Heat podcast where he was promoting his upcoming book, There’s Just One Problem: True Tales from the Former, One-Time, 7th Most Powerful Person in WWE.

Regarding how the fight transpired, Gewirtz said, “Well, you know, ‘won the fight’, I don’t know [if I would say that]. You know that GIF of Jerry and George [from Seinfeld]? I think that was, you know… it wasn’t exactly Tyson/Holyfield.”

Interestingly, Gewirtz is a close associate of Dwayne Johnson, who had a legendary career as The Rock with the WWE, and even makes appearances on special occasions. The former WWE writer is currently Senior Vice President of Seven Bucks Productions, a company co-owned by Johnson. He was a part of the WWE staff from 1999 to 2012.

Despite the fight, Gewirtz showed immense respect for Heyman in the interview. He also gave his opinion on what it would be like to get inside the ring with the legend, “I think it would be a horrific mistake on a historic level you can’t possibly imagine, but if there was ever a tag team match with me and [The] Rock versus Heyman and Roman [Reigns], that would be amusing in terms of like the sheer greatness and sheer awfulness combined into one attraction. You know, but I’d be down for it”.

There are many WWE backstage fights that have been woven into wrestling folklore. Some of them include The Undertaker choking Kurt Angle when he did not realize the latter was involved in a mock fight with then-CEO Vince McMahon, Harley Race pulling a gun on Hulk Hogan during their NWA days, and Rick Rude knocking out the Ultimate Warrior with a punch.
