Former Manchester United women’s star Karen Carney deleted her Twitter account after receiving abuse due to her comments about Leeds, reported Mirror.

Currently working for Amazon Prime Video as a pundit, Carney commented on the manner in which Leeds was promoted following their  5-0 win at West Brom on December 29.

Marcelo Bielsa’s side is known to outrun their opponents and the same thing happened against West Brom. Carney lauded their efforts, however, expressed her doubt over them being able to continue the form throughout the season.

She said, “I actually think they got promoted because of Covid in terms of it gave them a bit of respite. I don’t know if they would have got up if they didn’t have that break.”

Leeds’ official Twitter account then responded with a post talking about their 10 point winning margin. While many considered the tweet offensive, Carney became a target of online abuse which took aim at her point, but also her gender.

Following backlash, Leeds owner Andrea Radrizzani took responsibility of the tweet. He said, “I take the responsibility of the club tweet. I consider that comment [from Carney] completely unnecessary and disrespectful to our club and particularly to the fantastic hard work of our players and coaches.”
